Before it hit Chicago, Brazilian waxing was brought to New York City from Brazil by the “J Sisters” in 1994. (All their names began with “J.”) Young Brazilian women wear tiny, tiny bikinis, which makes waxing absolutely necessary. In Hawaii, it is swimsuit season year-round, and you want to feel clean and sexy before you hit the beach. Australian women are avid waxers, as are college age women everywhere. When the J sisters opened up shop in New York City, the bare look swept through the country, starting a waxing obsession from New York to LA and Chicago. Now, the Brazilian wax is part of the regular routines of sophisticated women everywhere. Brazilian waxing has been talked about on shows like Tyra, Sex in the City, and The Girls Next Door. Celebrities including Vanessa Williams, Sarah Jessica Parker, Tyra Banks, Cameron Diaz, Lindsay Lohan, and Gwenyth Paltrow, have disclosed their need for Brazilian waxing. By the way, Gwenyth Paltrow remarked that the J sisters “changed her life!”

We recommend giving the Brazilian wax two tries. The second time is usually a lot less painful than the first time, as the hair grows in more slowly, and the hairs seem to be less strongly rooted. Do you remember the first time you tried to tweeze your eyebrows? Do you remember how much it hurt, how it made your eyes tear up, or made your nose itch? But over time, the hairs became less strongly rooted in the skin and were easier and less painful to remove. You will have the same experience waxing other areas of the body. That’s why we recommend trying a Brazilian wax two times, one month apart to get an accurate idea of how your subsequent waxes will be. You’ll be surprised how easy it is the second time. You’ll never want to go back to daily shaving!

#1. Brazilian waxing removes all the hair from the front, the labia, and between the cheeks. Usually, women choose to remove all the hair, but for those who don’t like the bare look, leaving a small strip at the top, or a triangle is another option. $50
